Cars as an alternative?
Cars as an alternative mode of transportation! Do we need to look at
the automobile we drive today as the "last resort" to getting us around?
Maybe. There are other choices. Certainly, it will take some drastic
occurances to have us make such alternative choices at this point.*
However, we can find "other" modes of transporting individuals right
now. For instance, you can go to
ZapWorld.Com and find some clever
alternatives for getting around town or country. And, right now there
are companies producing "Hybrid Electric" automobiles that get
exceptional fuel economy. There's a lot of research being done in the
area of "Solar" powered vehicles, too. That's a way off yet, if ever
it becomes a solution to our current challenges. But, there's a lot of
promise and developement being done in pure electrics for powering
motor vehicles. When the battery storage hurtle is finally overcome,
they will certainly become a significant factor in meeting our
transportation needs in the future. "Fuel Cells" is another very
promising renewable power source for cars as well as homes and industry, for
that matter. More on this subject is on another page. (See our
Fuel Cells page.) You can also get more detailed informational books on these
subjects from
Amazon.com and/or
Buy.com. (See the "Energy Store" also)
Having said this, do I think that our current cars, minivans, and SUV's
will soon become a thing of the past? No way! Soon SUV's will comprise
over 50 percent of the US motor vehicle population! There's simply too
much demand and too much supply of fossil fuels right now to change that
picture. However, the model "T" and the station wagon have already gone
the way of the horseless carriage. There will be a day that the cars
of today will also go that route. So, we must press forward in the
pursuit of sensible alternative energy sources for transportation
purposes. These are truly exciting times!
